Canelo Alvarez Suspended 6 Months for Positive PED Test Before GGG Fight

Alvarez blamed the failed tests on contaminated meat - a common problem in his homeland - but on Wednesday the Nevada State Athletic Commission gave him a year-long ban with the second six months suspended.

As reported by TMZ, the two were supposed to meet on May 5, but that date had already been cancelled following Canelo's positive test.

After much trial and tribulation, unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin has finally got an opponent for May 5th.

The eagerly awaited rematch between the pair who battled to a controversial draw in September was scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but the replacement bout will be staged at the StubHub centre in Carson, California. "Golovkin vs. Martirosyan will definitely be the fiesta de resistance of Cinco De Mayo". But Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin could be stripped of his IBF Middleweight title should he go through with a fight with Vanes Martirosyan.

"As we have maintained all along", Golden Boy's statement read, "the trace amounts of clenbuterol found in Canelo's system in February came from meat contamination, and we provided the Nevada State Athletic Commission with a great deal of evidence to support those facts". Since then, Golovkin has been on an historic trajectory, knocking out one opponent after another to unify the WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO World Middleweight Titles.

Alvarez was not in attendance, but will be eligible to return to boxing from August 17. "And our guy is in the gym and ready to fight".

"I am truly shocked about what has happened, and for those who have doubts and suspicions about my integrity I have always been and always will be a clean fighter", Alvarez said. I have a lot of Mexican fans.

Saunders was keen to face the Kazakh KO artist in the summer but his team are now expected to wait on the more lucrative Alvarez rematch.
