Jodhpur court to decide rape accused Asaram's fate shortly

With the Jodhpur Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Court set to prononunce its verdict in the rape case against the self-styled godman Asaram Bapu on Wednesday, Rajasthan has turned into a fortress.

According to the court's order, the Central Jail Superintendent and the district administration have been directed to make all arrangements for proceedings inside the jail for the pronouncement of the judgment. Earlier, Jodhpur Court dismissed the petition seeking entry of media persons in Central Jail of Jodhpur for the coverage of Asaram Bapu rape case judgment.

In view of Judgment in Asharam Bapu's case, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday issued an advisory to the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana asking them maintain law and order. Security was also stepped up around the victim's house in Shahajahanpur.

The Ministry also told three states to deploy additional force in the places where there could be a chance of violence during or after the verdict.

A vigil was also being kept outside Asaram's ashram at Rudrapur, he said. He is now at the Jodhpur court where the others, accused in the case along with Asaram Bapu, have presented themselves before him.

Asaram is accused of raping a teenage girl from Shahajahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, who was studying at the godman's ashram at Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh. The self-styled godman was charged with rape allegations and was arrested on 31 August, 2013. Asaram's supporters will not be allowed to gather outside the jail. March 2014: Two unidentified men throw acid on an aide of one of the witnesses in the Surat case. Five days later, victim's father demanded death for Asaram Bapu, while godman's son describes the minor as mentally unstable. The police had filed an FIR under Sections 342, 376, 354 A, 506, 509/34 of the IPC, Sections 23, 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 8 of the POCSO Act.

The alleged incident of sexual assault took place on August 15, 2013.
