The Latest on the actress charged with helping to recruit women into a cult-like organization. She is set to appear in a Brooklyn federal court later today.
The actress, who played Clark Kent's friend Chloe on the show, was arrested on Friday for allegedly participating in alleged sex cult Nxivm.
Mack and Raniere's arrests follow a report from the New York Times published last Fall with accounts of former members who said women were extorted into having sex and were branded with his initials on their hips.
Allison Mack was charged Friday sex trafficking after federal prosecutors said she worked as a slave "master" recruiting women to a group led by a man who sold himself as a self-improvement guru to the stars. She detailed that she joined Nxivm at the young age of 23, and thought of it as a "self-help/personal growth course that helped me handle my previous shyness, which is why I continued with the program". The indictment, which is dated Thursday, says, for example, that Mack and Raniere, who also went by the name "Vanguard", allegedly conspired to coerce a woman into doing labor for them by making her believe that if she didn't, the victim would suffer "serious harm".
"I am deeply disturbed and embarrassed to have been associated with NXIVM", Kreuk wrote. "I hope that the investigation leads to justice for all of those affected".
Prosecutors said she required women she recruited to engage in sexual activity with Raniere, who paid Mack in return.
The women told investigators they were subjected to "master-slave" conditions that involved physical punishments for disobeying orders.
NXIVM identifies itself as a self-help group - "a multi-level marketing organization that offers personal and professional development seminars" - but has been accused of sapping the resources of its members, holding people against their will, and branding malnourished women as part of a non-consensual domination/submission culture.
Rumors of NXIVM running a "sex cult" first surfaced in November of past year, with Mack as the news hook for numerous entertainment outlets.
Sarah Edmondson's brand, received when she was branded by the Nxivm group. "We will explore any and all legal remedies to correct these lies". "Her nickname among defectors is 'Pimp Mack'".
