Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves to lead the visiting Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, leveling the Western Conference finals at one game apiece. The best-of-seven series resumes Wednesday on the floor of the Mojave Desert. The Western Conference Final will start Saturday night. "We were chasing the game all night".
Gerard Gallant isn't fixated on the number of goals Marc-Andre Fleury has given up lately. Nor are the Jets San Jose, a solid team but one missing spiritual leader Joe Thornton and also with depth challenges when compared to Winnipeg and Nashville. The Golden Knights converted theirs - and early.
Don't take the lede as a troll phrase, one that would suggest the Jets don't see much in the Vegas Golden Knights.
Vegas weathered a blistering attack by Winnipeg at the outset.
"We had a week off, too", Fleury said.
Nikolaj Ehlers picked up his seventh assist of the playoffs but still has yet to score in the post-season.
Connor Hellebuyck had 25 saves for the Jets. "Fleu-ry!" - and were quickly quieted by another Marchessault backhander that beat Hellebuyck. After a grueling seven game series, that turned out to be correct.
It was a scoreless second period as the shots were tied at eight apiece after Vegas outshot Winnipeg 13-11 in the first. Deflection goals. Big shot by (Dustin) Byfuglien.
A tripping penalty on Brayden McNabb in the dying seconds before the second intermission gave hope to the Jets and their white-dressed fans. From the top to bottom, they have players who can produce. Connor took advantage, squeezing a shot between Fleury and the post from the bottom of the left circle 7:17 into the third.
And then, just as suddenly, it was 3-1.
The Golden Knights talked at length for two days about the need for a fast start. It was Tatar's first point of the postseason.
"You can't lose your first two games (of a series) in the playoffs, especially against a team like that", Marchessault said after today's morning skate. "Everybody has to be more competitive. We just couldn't get any momentum going".
The Wild, meanwhile, are looking for a new general manager in the wake of another first-round playoff exit, this time in five games to Winnipeg. They took an unusual route to the conference final, winning three times in Nashville, including Game 7. "We know the things that we can do better as a team and individually, and we set the bar high". But their Stanley Cup aspirations may be determined by how they react to this latest blow.
The downtown arena in Winnipeg claimed more victims than any other in the league this season.
Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg has a well-earned reputation as a tough place to play.
After losing the series opener, Marchessault told reporters the team faced a must-win game.
"I'm not much of a believer in momentum during the playoffs", said Paul Maurice, the Winnipeg coach.
The expansion Golden Knights are a team that most people doubted throughout the regular season and few experts expected their glorious run to continue once the Stanley Cup playoffs arrived. "It has no implication on the next game".
Game 3 will decide the direction of the series, as a Washington victory gives it four chances to clinch the series, while a Lightning win makes the matchup a bit more competitive. The over is 2-0-2 in the last four Las Vegas games when its opponent had allowed two or less goals in their last contest.
