Man of 26 dies of Nipah infection

They have been informed how to take precautions for infection control while handling Nipah cases.

The health ministry is closely monitoring the outbreak of Nipah virus (NiV) in some parts of Kerala in India, according to a notification it issued yesterday. Goa lacks expertise in proper differential diagnosis of novel viral pathogens or local viral serotypes. Wellbeing authorities connected the underlying passings to an all around colonized by bats at a house in Kerala's Kozihikode where the four individuals from a family kicked the bucket of the uncommon Nipah infection. Nipah was reported in India in 2001, too (in Siliguri, West Bengal). It advised people not to eat fruits and vegetables bitten by birds, bats and animals. Bats are mammals of the Chiroptera order. Banana, avocados and dates benefit from bat pollination.

Reports of dead bats being found on the premises of a government school in Himachal Pradesh created panic in the state. "While the incubation period is long for some, on an average in 90 per cent of cases, the disease manifests itself within two weeks of exposure to the virus", Menon said.

The global threat that Nipah poses has determined the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) - an worldwide alliance of governmental and non-profit organizations - to act against the deadly virus.

When the symptoms start showing, look out for the commons signs of influenza. This infection is very rare and also there is no vaccine available as of now.

While officials believe this outbreak began with someone infected somehow by a fruit bat, the ministry official said every subsequent infection came from human-to-human contact, sometimes passing to relatives or medical workers caring for the sick. The authorities also fear that the combing operations had caused fruit bats to leave the spot.

Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus, which means it is transmitted from animals to humans.

Ensure that containers for sharps objects are placed as close as possible to the immediate area where the objects are being used (point of use') to limit the distance between use and disposal, and ensure the containers remain upright at all times, the advisory said.

Virologists also use Antibody detection by ELISA (IgG and IgM) to confirm identification.

"As there is no approved specific therapy for this infection prevention is the only cure". Ribavirin has been effective in laboratory but not tested on humans. Kerala government has declared a pay of Rs. 5 lakh to the casualties of Nipah infection. It was licensed to Profectus with an eye toward developing a vaccine for humans.

That said, experts and researchers are continuously trying to understand the virus. The relation between reproductive cycle of fruit bats and Nipah outbreak need to be investigated.

Dr K Ramesh Reddy, Director of Medical Education, Telangana said one of the patients had visited Kerala but did not go the areas where Nipah virus was found.
