An own goal from Thiago Cionek and a second-half effort from M'Baye Niang gave Senegal a two-goal lead and although Grzegorz Krychowiak halved the deficit late on, Aliou Cisse's team were full value for the three points.
If the Polish did not know what a kora or balafon was, they soon found out, because Senegal's support was basically two bands: a gently swaying group with percussion on one side of the pitch, and a high-energy dance troupe with koras, balafons and the kitchen sink on the other.
It was the always-dangerous Niang who was at the heart of Senegal's opening goal.
'We also made a lot of simple mistakes and when you're making these simple mistakes it makes it hard to attack'.
Poland's next game is against Colombia on Sunday in Kazan.
Cisse captained Senegal's 2002 team but said his country has never had a player like Sadio Mane before. Kamil Glik was on the bench. Poland have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1986.
Unlike Lewandowski, Senegal's talisman Mane managed to have a significant effect on the game despite being isolated for long spells.
Poland then proceeded to let the match pass by them as Adam Nawalka's disjointed, lacklustre side idled along without imposing on Senegal in the slightest. Prior to that they beat South Korea 3-2, but fell to Nigeria 1-0. He tries to pass the ball back to Szczesny from near enough the half-way line but he doesn't get enough on it!
The Southampton defender did not see the Senegalese poacher until it was too late and he then poked the ball past Szczesny's late-arriving cavalry and walked the ball into the net.
"We didn't get any good forward balls to do anything with, and instead concentrated on keeping the ball at the back and keeping possession". Piszczek drills a low cross from the right to Milik but his first-time effort at the near post fails to find the target.
Krychowiak needlessly hooked a high ball back toward his own goal from inside the Senegal half and with Szczesny attempting to intercept by coming out of his penalty area, Niang gleefully knocked the ball into an unguarded goal. It's going to count!
