Carmelo Anthony traded from Thunder to Atlanta Hawks

The full deal sends Dennis Schroder from the Hawks to the Thunder in exchange for Anthony and a protected first-round pick, and sends Mike Muscala from Atlanta to Philly. That will come with what now is a luxury tax payment of $88.8 million, meaning the Thunder is slated to pay about $237.5 million combined next season.

He came to a mutual understanding with the Thunder that his scaled-back role with the team isn't what he wants, so it was always likely that he would sign with a new team this summer.

Houston has been the logical landing spot for Anthony ever since news broke that the Thunder were looking for a way out of his contract. He averaged a career-high 19.4 points along with 6.2 assists in 31.0 minutes per game last season, although his 3-point accuracy dipped to 29.0 percent from 34.0 percent the year before. It would have counted against the salary cap, and Oklahoma City would have had no way to get it off the books. And on a team with few scorers outside of Westbrook and Paul George, he should get plenty of opportunities to produce.

Reports from ESPN and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Anthony has been traded to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal.

Luwawu-Cabbarot is two years removed from being selected with the No. 24 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

For the Hawks, this deal allows them to get out of Schroder's contract and commit to Trae Young at point guard while adding a possible future first-rounder. "The Heat received a boost last season when Wade rejoined the team at midseason, after time with the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers".

ESPN, which first reported the trade, said the Thunder will send Muscala to the Philadelphia 76ers for Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, and Philadelphia's Justin Anderson will be sent to Atlanta. He was selected by the Mavericks with the No. 21 pick of the 2015 NBA Draft.
