Fans freak out as Carmelo Anthony looks set for Thunder exit

The Thunder and Carmelo Anthony are heading for a divorce after just one season together.

The Thunder are looking for ways to cut costs as they face a historic luxury tax bill.

ESPN reported Oklahoma City management and Anthony's agent, Leon Rose, are cooperating in the process.

That 1st season with the Thunder didn't work out, and even though Melo opted into his deal with the team to play next season, the franchise will likely part ways with him this summer.

James' L.A. Lakers and Paul's Houston Rockets were mentioned as the other teams expected show interest in Anthony. If Oklahoma City uses the stretch provision, it would slice off $90 million on the tax bill, and his salary would be spread out over the next three years at $9.3 million per season.

If Anthony is traded, it's "likely" any team acquiring him would do so with the intention of waiving Anthony and allowing him to enter free agency, according to Wojnarowski.

Anthony said numerous right things during his time in Oklahoma City, talking continuously about how he'd "accepted" and "sacrificed" for a role as a third banana. His unwillingness to come off the bench created awkward moments, as well.

Anthony, who turned 34 last month, is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-low 16.2 points and shot a career-worst 40.4 percent from the field. He struggled during the Thunder's first-round playoff exit against the Jazz and expressed displeasure in his role.

Anthony would have the option of joining a number of contenders if he becomes a free agent this offseason. "I think I was willing to accept that challenge in that role, but I think I bring a little bit more to the game as far as being more knowledgeable and what I still can do as a basketball player".
