Trump's Campaign Chair Found Guilty, Lawyer Makes Plea Deal

Cohen, who is also the former deputy national finance chair of the Republican National Committee, pleaded guilty to felony counts of fraud and campaign finance violations on Tuesday.

Each of the bank fraud counts carries a significant maximum sentence and the 69-year-old Manafort could theoretically live out the remainder of his years in prison - though a legal expert told Agence France-Presse it would run to under a decade in reality.

Most legal experts say a sitting president can not be indicted for a crime, but the Constitution allows Congress to impeach and remove a president from office for "high crimes and misdemeanours".

Trump has admitted reimbursing Cohen for one of the payments, after earlier denying knowledge. But in his statement to a federal court Tuesday, Cohen said the payment was made "for principal goal of influencing election" - a violation of federal campaign finance law.

A NY judge has formally ended the attorney-client privilege review of items seized from President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, leaving prosecutors to decide what's next in their fraud probe.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani reacted from a Scotland golf course to the Tuesday news that Michael Cohen pleaded guilty and Paul Manafort was found guilty by a jury.

Trump has, on numerous occasions, denied any collusion with Russian Federation or having sex with Stormy Daniels and has called the Robert Muller investigation a witch hunt.

Previously, Cohen said he paid off Trump's mistress Stormy Daniels out of his own pocket.

"'Justice" took a 12-year-old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a "deal.' Such respect for a fearless man!" I can tell you as the President has stated on numerous occasions, he did nothing wrong. "The Cohen thing is over". "But It's not even a campaign violation".

The payment was completed just weeks before the 2016 United States election.

"They're weren't taken out of campaign finance".

President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer has pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and his onetime campaign chairman has been convicted for financial fraud - and those developments are raising questions about Trump's potential legal jeopardy.

It remains unclear if the former Trump lawyer has committed to cooperate with the ongoing Special Counsel Robert Mueller probe over the alleged Russian Federation meddling into the 2016 USA general elections.

Trump expressed sympathy for Manafort's plight, praising his former campaign aide for not talking to prosecutors, as Cohen has.

There has been no indication that Cohen will talk to or cooperated with Mueller's team. US intelligence agencies have concluded Moscow interfered.

Judge William Pauley set a sentencing date for Cohen for December 12.

Mueller's investigation, which began in May 2017, has resulted in the indictment of more than 30 people and five guilty pleas.
