Dramatic moment escalator 'collapses' at Rome metro station

An escalator at a train station in Italy malfunctioned on Tuesday, reportedly leaving at least 20 people injured.

The dramatic footage shows people on the parallel escalator trying to pull others to safety.

Ansa said at least 20 people had been hurt, a lot of them suffering leg injuries.

Supporters of the CSKA club were travelling to watch their team play in a Champions League match against Roma when the escalator gave way at Repubblica station in the Italian capital, reports Sky Italia.

Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari told The Telegraph that what they saw when they arrived on the scene indicated that people crushed at the bottom of the escalator as they started piling up on it.

"A group of CSKA fans were going down into the station".

Sky Italia (via the UK's Daily Mirror) reports that the injured fans were from Russian Federation.

There were also reports of one Russian visitor being stabbed with a knife, but they were later refuted by the Italian embassy in Moscow.

La Repubblica website said the accident may have been caused by singing and chanting fans jumping up and down on it.
