The club failed to finish in the top four for the first time under Wenger in his final two campaigns, a situation Emery believes was down to losing the "defensive structure".
Talking to Marca, Unai Emery said: 'Before Wenger came, Arsenal celebrated 1-0 and were based on defensive solidity. "I have spoken with him and I push him to give even more quality in matches, and keep up the good performances against big and small teams, home and away". I told the players: "We started at kilometer zero".
"We came to an Arsenal that hadn't beaten any of the top six and, while we still haven't done so yet, they also struggled to win away from home at all and we have already improved in that area", Emery said.
Arsenal have announced that club captain Laurent Koscielny is set to make his long-awaited return in the next week.
Arsenal haven't won the Premier League since 2004, but are now enjoying a fine run of form, having gone 16 games unbeaten in all competitions.
The Gunners boss has admitted his side's aim is to get back among the Champions League elite, and feels their recent progress has been good. What I want to do is unite the two and become more competitive. "The process with him in this worldwide break is to finish training with us every day to start playing, little by little". Emery didn't mention Tottenham or Man United as any of the teams he wanted to match so if we are going to be moving up to the level of Man City, Liverpool or Chelsea then we really could do with some impressive performances in the coing tests.
Arsenal travel to Bournemouth on Sunday, hoping to break a run of three consecutive draws in all competitions.
"Both are very hard, but we want to ensure we perform the best we can on both fronts".
Asked why both summer signings had been made to wait for their chance to play, Emery said: "Because you have to respect hierarchy. We want Arsenal to convey energy and hunger".
