It remains unclear whether Welbeck will be able to play for Arsenal again before his contract expires in the summer.
Danny Welbeck scored the 77th-minute victor, which gave Arsenal sole possession of first place in Group E. The Gunners haven't lost in their last 14 matches and have found their form under manager Unai Emery, a three-time victor of the Europa League with Sevilla.
"We do not even know what I'll be doing tomorrow".
Arsenal revealed later that the 27-year-old has been taken to hospital, and coach Unai Emery described the injury as "the worst news" of the night in a press conference.
"Now he's at the hospital and the news is at the moment we are going to wait, but we think this is a serious injury".
The Arsenal forward was stretchered off in the first 30 minutes of the 0-0 draw in Portugal after landing awkwardly on his ankle following an aerial challenge with full-back Bruno Gaspar. We wish him all the best in his recovery.
"He's wealthy boy now, it's nothing to do with that, but for his mental well-being".
Welbeck pulled out of the England squad to face US following his injury, having been named in the 28-man squad earlier in the day. First it's in your mind - you think for the player.
"Structures within the ankle which could [be] injured [are] the medial, lateral, anterior & posterior ligaments, tibia, fibula & talus bones as well as chondral surfaces".
