The Boeing 737-MAX plunged into the Java Sea on October 29, killing all 189 people aboard.
Safety experts involved in the investigation said United States aviation officials and airline pilots hadn't been told the new system had been added to the 737 MAX aircraft.
A pilot who asked to remain anonymous said manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus recommend only a few days of training for updated aircraft models such as the 737-MAX.
And while the FAA investigates the situation and the families of victims await answers, it is no secret that Boeing has faced issues with its risk analysis procedures in the past, including when it failed to recognize or counteract potentially fire-prone rechargeable lithium batteries installed in the 787 aircraft.
The stall-prevention system was created to help pilots avoid having to raise a plane's nose too high.
All 189 people on board the flight were killed.
The airspeed indicator is like a speedometer and tells the pilot how fast the plane is moving through the air. The unions say this left them in a compromising position of not knowing what to do in the event something went wrong.
According to Muilenburg, the company spends "thousands of hours of testing and evaluating and simulating" to give pilots the information they need to operate airplanes safely and he reiterated that the equipment operates correctly. The FAA is part of a joint investigation conducted with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Indonesian authorities, according to an FAA press release. "The bottom line here is the 737 MAX is safe and safety is a core value for us".
A union bulletin to pilots at American Airlines Group Inc. said the company hadn't provided details about the system with its documentation about the plane.
Known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, it was added "to compensate for some unique aircraft handling characteristics", according to a bulletin sent by Southwest's flight operations division to its pilots on November 10. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 then made another flight to Jakarta that same day, and the pilots reported further problems.
Investigators are still searching for the cockpit recorder from the flight, which they hope will help them understand what caused the plane to crash. It does this by gathering data from the plane's pitot tube and the static port, which essentially compare differentials in the air pressure to arrive at the plane's speed and the altitude.
