AP top player Murray adds O’Brien; Tua wins Camp

Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa won the Maxwell Award on Thursday night.

The Crimson Tide quarterback and fellow Heisman Trophy finalists Kyler Murray of Oklahoma and Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State were on Wall Street on Friday to ring the closing bell on a day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 558 points. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the AP player of the year Wednesday, and was chosen as the Davey O'Brien Award victor as the nation's top quarterback today.

Tagovailoa took home the Walter Camp Award as well as the Maxwell Award, both of which honor the nation's top player. He joins Henry (2015) and McCarron (2013) as the only Crimson Tide players to win the Maxwell Award.

"Kyler Murray has accomplished more in one season and had more impact on the Sooners' tradition in one season than any other player in our history", said legendary former OU coach Barry Switzer.

Haskins, a third-year sophomore, stepped in after the departure of a four-year starter and smashed Ohio State and Big Ten passing records. Jackson won the Heisman that season.

For the 16th time in the last 19 years, a quarterback will win college football's most coveted individual award and that should not be a surprise this season. Murray, who batted.296 with 10 home runs and 13 doubles in 50 games as the Sooners' center fielder, signed for almost $5 million, with the A's agreeing to let him return to school and play football this season. The 5-foot-9 signal-caller led the Sooners to a College Football Playoff berth while throwing for 4,053 yards and 40 touchdowns and rushing for 892 yards with 11 scores.

Murray was Mayfield's backup last season and won the starter's job in preseason practice.

Or will the Heisman go to Murray?
