Pelosi says House Dems will start seeking Trump tax returns

Mr Trump exchanged heated words with Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker-designate of the House, and Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, who met the president to try to end the impasse over funding the building of a wall along the Mexican border.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence meet with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in the Oval Office of the White House, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018, in Washington. "This holiday season, the president knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate, and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement". Pelosi asked of Trump.

"I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck, because the people of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country", he said before reporters left their ringside seats. "I will take the mantle".

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday offered his first comment on a deadly attack at a Christmas market in France, using it as proof that increased security is required on his country's border with Mexico. The bravado and playground taunts that are the president's signature weapons of choice ran squarely up against the Democratic resistance, subpoenas and gridlock of a soon-to-be empowered Congress.

Pelosi also received applause after Trump said in the meeting that it might be hard for her to negotiate and she responded by noting House Democratic victories last month.

Tweeting ahead of a White House meeting with opposition Democratic Party leaders, Trump claimed that the wall was needed to prevent "large scale crime and disease" brought by illegal immigrants. Pelosi would need a majority of those present and voting in the chamber - as many as 218 - to be elected. In theory, if Democrats lose the House in 2020, she could serve beyond 2022 as Speaker if her party claws control later, but it's unlikely she could survive another Republican win.

Members of a caravan of Central American asylum seekers scale a wall at the US-Mexico border. "That will be the easiest of all, what do you think Chuck?"

"Elections have consequences, Mr. President", stated Schumer.

Pelosi said Trump does not have the votes in the House to secure the billions he wants to fulfill his promise to build a wall.

The Post whip count indicates there are still up to 16 Democrats who oppose Pelosi but, assuming everyone votes, she can lose up to 17 votes and still become Speaker.

"When the president brags that he won North Dakota and IN, he's IN real trouble", Mr Schumer said to the astonished press capturing the back-and-forth.

If Mr Trump rejects that, Democrats are urging a continuing resolution that would fund all the remaining appropriations bills at current levels through September 30. "It's his choice to accept one of those options or shut the government down".

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi gave her weekly press conference Thursday.

Trump wants at least $5 billion for the wall in the next funding package. "We have to have an evidence-based conversation about what does work and what money has been spent and how effective it is", Pelosi said.
