Battle for the Ages: Federer Trumps Serena in New Year’s Day Epic

It took them 43 Grand Slam singles titles and 21 years to face each other for the first time but when the moment finally came, Roger Federer and Serena Williams gave the crowd more than what they came for as the two legends captured the moment in a ideal selfie on court.

Last year American tennis legend John McEnroe scoffed that if Serena Williams' record were to be measured by the standards of male players, she would rank a very low 700th in the men's circuit.

Defending champions Switzerland have two wins from two games ahead of Thursday's meeting with Greece, while the United States take on Great Britain next.

Williams dropped the first set but recovered to beat Federer's Swiss team-mate Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Leading 4-1 in the first set, Williams looked set to be cruising to a comfortable victory until her 21-year-old opponent hit back to win the next five games and take the opener.

Serena Williams and Roger Federer spent New Year's Eve on the red carpet!

Federer spoke about how much he enjoyed the experience, saying: "It was great fun". Serena, what a pleasure, what an honour.

"I admire everything she's done on and off the court. It was a great match for me". It was such fun, we grew up together.

"It just goes to show you how we as players can go so far in our careers but still have our lives which mean so much to us as well".

43 Grand Slam crowns.

However, it was some of the on-court battles between the tennis greats and their classy tributes to one another after the match that captured the tennis worlds' hearts. I think his serve is super-underestimated. He has a killer serve, - literally, you can't read it. I've watched him all the time but I never realised how good it was.

Serena Williams required some running repairs on her ankle as she powered to a 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 win over Maria Sakkari at the Hopman Cup on Monday.

Earlier in the night, Williams raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before losing six of the next seven games.

As he spoke on court, Federer was already looking forward to the next match.

"I've played with some of the greatest doubles players in the world in Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis, and I've also played against some of the best in Venus and other great ones in the past".
