How 'Black Panther' Makes History With Its Best Picture Oscar Nomination

The 91st Academy Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, Feb. 24, with the red carpet show starting up at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.

In the Best Motion Picture category (which can accommodate up to 10 films), the Golden Globes's surprise victor Bohemian Rhapsody snagged a spot alongside favorites The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, and Black Kkklansman.

Best actor: Christian Bale, "Vice"; Bradley Cooper, "A Star Is Born"; Rami Malek, "Bohemian Rhapsody"; Viggo Mortensen, "Green Book"; Willem Dafoe "At Eternity's Gate".

More than 30 years after the release of his first feature film, legendary director Spike Lee has earned his first Oscar nomination for best director and his first nomination for best picture.

As Mexico's official Oscar entry, "Roma" could also make history by being the first foreign-language film to go on to win best picture.

Emily Blunt has never been nominated for an Oscar.

Timothee Chalamet has not been nominated this year. There was also a hope that if superhero films and animated hits were recognized, the Oscars telecast would see ratings gains, as it did in 1998, hitting record highs as "Titanic" swept the awards.

Despite having directed over two dozen features, including a prolific string of modern classics like Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn and 25th Hour, Spike has been passed over year after year by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, even as some of his films have been nominated in other categories. Peele, McKittrick and Blum were nominated in the same category for "Get Out" past year, and Peele went on to win in the original screenplay category. "He did get Best Actor, and the film did pick up a Best Picture [nomination], but curiously he was left off that Best Director list". It has also received six other nominations. Along with Lady Gaga and Colman, the best actress nominees are Yalitza Aparicio ("Roma"), Glenn Close ("The Wife") and Melissa McCarthy ("Can You Ever Forgive Me?"). She also has yet to win. The fifth spot in Supporting Actress was open (after you figure Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Regina King as locks), and it looked to be Foy's, but that nomination did not materialize.

Many had predicted the first-time director would receive a nod for his acclaimed work in "A Star Is Born" behind the camera.

The film definitely has a lot to celebrate, racking up an impressive seven nominations in total, one less than the leading films "A Star Is Born" and "Vice" but the morning's announcement didn't come without some snubs for hardcore fans.

The "A Star Is Born" actress and musician was recognized as a lead actress and for the song "Shallow", which she co-wrote with Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson.

The company's Netflix Film Twitter account tweeted out the nominations this morning.
