Huawei's Mate X is the most promising foldable phone, yet!

In an interview on Sunday, Ji explained that "in the short term this smartphone is important to stimulate the 5G industry and open the door to new collaboration".

In terms of specifications, the Mate X is very much a high end phone. But more importantly, the 6.6-inch display on the front that you get when folded beats the Galaxy Fold's tiny 4.6-inch display. It's unavoidable that a foldable screen phone in general is thicker than a traditional single screen phone given different technical requirements. We are seeing a lot of progress. The screen that folds around the rear is dormant unless used to take photos or for other similar tasks.

When the phone is folded the "front" has a 6.6 inch display.

"Our engineers worked on this screen for over three years", he said at an event to present the new phone in Barcelona ahead of the start of the four-day Mobile World Congress trade fair in the Spanish city on Monday. In the unfolded position, the Mate X bears an 8-inch tablet OLED display.

Those blistering speeds come as the result of Huawei having expertise making both cellular modems for mobile devices, and the networking equipment those cell networks run on.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd last week unveiled its own folding smartphone, priced at almost $2,000, in a bid to top the technology of Apple Inc and Chinese rivals and reignite consumer interest amid slumping sales.

Taking little cues from the Mate X, it looks like Oppo's foldable phone has a bigger screen when it opens up to a tablet. The phone is said to be equipped with Huawei's own Kirin 980 core chip, which also powers the company's latest Mate 20 smartphone. The Mate X will ship with 55W Huawei SuperCharge capability, allowing users to charge 85 percent of the phone's battery in just thirty minutes. As for memory, it has 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of native storage that's expandable up to 256 GB with a Nano Memory or NM card, the company's proprietary storage card format that's comparable in size with a nano SIM.

Huawei has also included a neat little feature called Mirror shooting that lets you see your picture as it's being taken.

The world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer believes the Mate X is two things the Galaxy Fold isn't: the future of design and the future of technology. The Huawei Mate X comes with a spectacular design which embodies what we think a foldable device should look like.
