Unlike past March events, this year's Apple March 25 event is going to steer clear of hardware. Users can also watch it on Android, and iOS devices. Subscriptions to outside services such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz are rumored to cost $10 per month each. No one knows exactly what the company will reveal in this big press event.
The event is set to last from 1PM to 3PM and will be available in English.
"Apple's focus will be - at least for the time being, is to help others on the sale of its video streaming subscriptions, and receive a revenue share of it", wrote the well-connected media reporter Peter Kafka at the technology blog "Recode". "Not everyone will see these options and we may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests", a Netflix spokesperson said. He thinks Apple needs to acquire a major video content company, although the iPhone maker has shunned big deals in the past. But there are no signs the company is looking to create an all-things-to-all-people platform such as Netflix.
Apple is the latest company to offer a direct-to-consumer streaming video, along with a news subscription service, by leveraging the power of its more than 1 billion devices. There's only one Canadian Apple Store taking part-Apple Yorkdale.
The first rumors of this service came to light earlier this year.
Subscriptions to online video services globally climbed 27 per cent a year ago to 613 million, eclipsing cable television subscriptions for the first time, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.
Another announcement at the event may be a new financial offering.
But there have been reports that some media organisations who already run their own subscription services have decided not to join the programme - put down to the 50% cut Apple is apparently requesting. The new bundle will exclude games that have in-app purchases.
There is also an untitled M. Night Shyamalan series and untitled Oprah Winfrey projects, among others.
Apple's original content will begin rolling out toward the end of the year.
The wait for details on Apple's rumored games subscription service could be over as soon as Monday, according to a new report.
