Huawei debuts P30 series smartphones, shoots for the moon

Huawei's flagship phones like the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro already offer 5x zoom thanks to their massive 40MP sensor at the rear. We are definitely going to have some fun testing these in the following days. And it comes in five colors to boot - from classic black, to super-shiny Amber Sunrise red! We've been hands-on with the new P30 phone ahead of the official launch and here's what you need to know about this premium handset. Selfies also see a huge improvement.

As you'd expect, both new phones run Android Pie along with the latest version of Huawei's EMUI.

The P30 Pro will ship with 8GB of RAM and will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage configurations.

"The Galaxy phone can not see a Galaxy", Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said in a jab at Samsung's Galaxy phones, while showing the audience a photo of a star cluster. Huawei also claimed that with technologies like SuperSpectrum Sensor and extreme optical SuperZoom lens, the cameras of P30 series smartphones can rival any professional camera. The camera system includes a 40 MP main lens, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens with 10X optical zoom, and a time-of-flight lens that captures blurred effects.

If you still needed a reason to spend money on a compact camera, it would have been for zoom reach, as even the best smartphone cameras could not provide usable zoom image quality beyond a 5x factor.

Artificial intelligence has also always been a key component in Huawei's smartphone design: the P30 phones make use of AIHDR+, whereby the camera surveys a picture for light and can decide where more is necessary rather than brightening the whole image.

At its highly-anticipated unveiling event in Paris today, Huawei spent a considerable amount of time boasting that the P30 Pro has the highest light sensitivity found on the market today. The sensor size is also bigger at 1/1.7 inches, 125% more than that of the Galaxy S10 Plus and the iPhone Xs Max. A 3,650mAh battery powers the phone and supports 22.5W Huawei Super Charge. Instead of a quad-camera array, the P30 loses the ToF camera, and settles for a triple camera setup instead. While the live-stream link is live on YouTube for the P30-series launch, fans from around the globe can tune in when the event commences. The P30 Pro HDR+ enables the front and rear cameras to combine multiple photos taken in quick succession to optimise overexposed and backlit selfies. The P30 might not have the Pro's 40W fast charging but it has an audio jack.

On the videography front, the Huawei P30 phones come with a Dual-View Video mode that is created to record wide-angle and closeup view simultaneously. No matter the color, the phone features an IP68 rating for protection against dust and water.
