U.S. must recognise Israeli sovereignty over Golan

He said: "After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!" This is the eve of Purim, and we have a miracle of Purim.

In gesture of appreciation, Netanyahu pointed out that "under President Trump, this partnership brought recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the US Embassy to it".

Pompeo is in Kuwait on the first leg of a Mideast tour that will take him next to Israel and Lebanon. He did it again. Then, he pulled out of the disastrous Iran treaty and re-imposed sanctions.

The proximity of meetings in Jerusalem and next week's tête-à-tête in Washington to Israel April 9 election has caused some to accuse the Trump Administration of campaigning on behalf of Netanyahu.

Israel will see such a development as rivaling the significance of last year's opening of a US embassy in Jerusalem - a unilateral White House action that now has city authorities planning to name a new subway station after the American president.

His remarks came as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Jerusalem. But other governments, including the USA, did not recognise the act.

"It's going to create real problems with our Arab partners in that part of the world", he said.

"This is the right response to Iran's aggression from Syria and a clear message to Assad".

Pompeo did not mention the issue, but the administration is considering recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan. Thank you, President Trump.

Netanyahu thanked Trump for the Golan Heights gesture. Netanyahu tweeted his gratitude. Netanyahu has been pushing the USA and the global community for official recognition of the Golan Heights as part of the State of Israel. "This term will be remembered in history as one where Netanyahu changed the rules of the game and brought about maximum Israeli gains with zero concessions".

Netanyahu faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust from Israel's attorney general.

Richard Haass, a former senior State Department official who is president of the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote on Twitter that he strongly disagreed with Trump's Golan decision.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Naftali Bennett of the New Right party warned that Israel may be expected to make concessions with the Palestinians in exchange for the move.

Trump, whose decision previous year to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv angered Palestinians, faced some criticism for his latest move.

The Israeli occupation of the Golan has been less controversial than the occupation of the West Bank partly because the Golan is sparsely populated.

"Only a government with the Union of Right-Wing Parties will stand firm", it said. "It is in the hands of Israel and will always remain in the hands of Israel", he said at the time.

Netanyahu has since accused Iran of trying to set up a terrorist network from the area.

Syrian officials denounced the comments, calling them arrogant.

The Golan Heights were seized in 1967, but officially annexed the territory in a 1981 law.

About 20,000 Israeli settlers live in the Golan, which overlooks Syrian territory. Israel annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, a move not recognized by most of the worldwide community.
