At least 13 dead in South Africa church collapse

According to local reports, there had been a storm with heavy winds in the area that is believed to have contributed to the church's collapse.

The 13 congregants who were killed when a KwaZulu-Natal church collapsed had been asleep at the time of the incident, police revealed on Friday. However, early reports suggest that the roof collapsed under persistent heavy rains. "An inquest docket has been opened and police are still at the scene", she said.

The church building collapse happened at the Pentecostal Church in Ndlangubo, near Richards Bay, on the KZN north coast. Emergency personnel said almost three dozen people were injured, at least six critically.

Leader of main South African opposition party the Democratic Alliance Mmusi Maimane, has offered his condolences.

At least 13 people were killed and 16 injured when a church in eastern South Africa partially collapsed during a pre-Easter service, local news agency ANA reported on Friday. We join hands with them, acutely aware of the excruciating pain that they must be going through. "The building whose wall collapsed would have served as a sleeping area for the female congregants".

Multiple people sustained minor injuries from the storm, including being cut by broken glass, medics said.

"This is a devastating tragedy and all the more that these lives have been lost as we begin our Passover services".
